Walk with me is the planned request for help: before you leave, you say where you’re going and who will look out for you. If all goes well, they only get the notice that you left and that you arrived. If something goes off plan, they’re alerted right away.
Before you start
- Walk with me is part of every plan, Free included.
- The people looking out for you need to be in a group with you (see How to create a group and invite your family).
- To head to a place, it needs to be saved in your places (see How to create a place alert).
1. Start a trip
On the map, tap the Walk with me shortcut in the left column. Another way: Profile, then Walk with me.
Tap Start a trip.
2. Choose where you’re going
Choose one of My routes, the routes you’ve already saved, or one of your places, like Home.
- With a saved route, the app watches the usual way: a detour counts when two positions in a row are far from it.
- With just the place, the app watches for you moving away from the destination, stops along the way and the time.
3. Choose who looks out for you
Pick the people from your groups who’ll follow along. Check the expected arrival time, worked out from your earlier trips, and tap Start.
They get a notice that you’re on the way and can see you and the destination on the map.
4. If something changes, answer
If you leave the route, stop along it for 12 minutes or more, or run past the expected time, the people looking out for you get an alert right away. At the same time, the app asks you: Are you okay?
- Tap I’m okay to put everyone at ease.
- Tap I need help to open SOS, with the 10-second countdown.
With no answer, the alert goes out again to the people looking out for you at 15, 45 and 105 minutes. The repeats stop when someone taps I’m on it or when you get back on the route.
5. Arrive
Your arrival is announced on its own. You can also tap I’ve arrived or End. If you don’t arrive, the trip ends on its own after 12 hours.
Saving your routes
To have ready-made routes, tap one of your trips on the timeline, or open it on the map, and then Save to Walk with me. When you arrive somewhere without a saved route, the app also offers to save the way you just took.
If you’re the one looking out
- The alert reaches your phone and stays in Notifications › Alerts.
- Tap I’m on it to let the others know you’re handling it. The person also finds out.
- The trip screen shows where the person is, the destination and any delay.
If something doesn’t work
- There’s nobody to choose: invite your family to a group first.
- The destination I want isn’t there: save the place in your places, or save a trip there to Walk with me.
- The alert went out on a detour I meant to take: tap I’m okay. From then on, the rest of the trip is watched by distance from the destination.
- In danger: Walk with me doesn’t replace emergency services. Call your local emergency number.
